Steve McClean

Managing Director






Steve McClean is Managing Director of SMC Ltd. A Chartered Member of IOSH, he has nearly 25 years experience in health and safety. With a proven track record in providing accredited IOSH & NEBOSH courses, in addition to delivering a range of consultancy services, he has considerable experience in a wide variety of industry sectors. He is a self-professed Adrenaline junkie, which some think is contradiction in terms considering his profession. !!

Finance Director
Michelle McClean is the Finance Director and has over 25 years experience working in Finance Management, mostly gained in local government. She ‘balances the books’ and ensures that all our work is costed correctly so that we can continue to provide outstanding quality and value for service and to all our clients. She is an avid ‘Rounders’ Captain and plays in the Bolton league, when she’s not shopping !

Brian Magennis

Brian Magennis

Brian Magennis is a Health and Safety Consultant and NEBOSH examiner and has been delivering NEBOSH and IOSH courses extensively since 2005. Experienced in the Public and Construction sectors he has vast experience of developing and assisting in risk assessments, safety policies, method statements and construction plans.
 

Brian Marcon

Brian Marcon is a Health and Safety Consultant/ Trainer with experience in the Construction and Mining sectors, conducting OHSAS 18001 audits and elivering quality training in all areas of Health and Safety since 1996. He has added experience of international work in delivering NEBOSH courses in the Middle East.

Keith Walters

Keith Walters is a Health & Safety Trainer. With an extensive manufacturing and oil & gas background, Keith has been delivering a range of Health and Safety training to a wide range of audiences, for more than 20 years. A NEBOSH examiner, Keith prides himself on delivering both interesting and informative courses.
 

Simon Cable

Simon is a Fire Safety and Business Continuity Consultant. Having served over 30 years in the Fire and Rescue service, he now provides consultancy services and lectures on a a wide range of issues including technical fire safety, project planning, business continuity planning, emergency planning and fire investigation.

Joe Portelli

Health and Safety Consultant / Trainer (Oil & Gas)
 

Joe Portelli

With over twenty-five years of offshore project safety management experience, up to senior management level in the offshore engineering and construction industry, Joe is responsible as the lead tutor for the NEBOSH Oil and Gas certificate, in which he has considerable experience. He also provides high level technical support to our Oil & Gas client on developing and maintaining health and safety management systems.
 

David Walker

David Walker is a Health and Safety Consultant and delivers a range of training such as accredited IOSH and bespoke courses, in addition, to delivering a range of consultancy services, and assisting clients with Contractor schemes. An Armed forces veteran he has experience in construction having been involved in many projects whilst serving with the Royal Engineers.

Steve Sumner OBE

Steve Sumner OBE

Steve originally trained as an environmental health officer, before returning to university to study occupational hygiene. He has worked as a local authority health and safety inspector and senior Safety Manager within local government, had a spell on secondment with HSE and latterly was national health and safety Policy adviser to the Local Government Association. He has wide experience in enforcement, advise and policy development at a national level. Steve was awarded the OBE in the 2007 new years honors list for services to health and safety in local government.
 

Lois Birtwistle

As Office Manager for SMC Ltd, she is responsible for the behind the scenes day-to-day operation of the business. This includes the administration of all IOSH and NEBOSH courses, and the administration and support of the Consultancy clients. She also provides invaluable support to the Directors.

James Cox

James is responsible for the marketing and promotion of the training courses and consultancy services to existing and new clients. His knowledge of all things to do with the t''internet means he also doubles as the web development executive.
