CSCS Card Scheme explained

The CSCS Card, which is issued by Construction Skills Certification Scheme is increasingly being demanded as proof of competence by major organisations and employers in the construction industry. CSCS cards provide proof that individuals working on construction sites have the required training and qualifications.  

There is a range of CSCS cards to cover most occupations in the construction industry. Your current job, your previous experience and any qualifications you have will determine which type of card you should apply for.

Types of Cards available;

CSCS-Red-Apprentice   

Apprentice

This card is for workers who are registered on a recognised apprenticeship framework.

This card is valid for the duration of the applicant's apprenticeship and is not renewable.

     
 CSCS-Red-Provisional  

The Provisional card is for;

  1. Applicants undergoing supervised work experience (aged 16+)
  2. Workers who are working through probationary periods of employment
  3. Holders of expired CSO cards (only until 30 June 2015)

This card lasts for one year and is not renewable and before it expires Provisional card holders must achieve or be registered for a recognised construction related qualification and then apply for the appropriate CSCS for their job.

Applicants must have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test 

     
 CSCS-Red-Trainee  

Trainee (Craft and Operative)

The Trainee CSCS card is issued to people who have passed their Health, Safety & Environment Test and are in the process of obtaining their NVQ/SVQ (QCF).

Trainee (Technical Supervisory and Management)

This card is available if you can provide evidence of current registration with a further/higher education college or university for a nationally recognised construction related qualification.

These cards are valid for three years and can be renewed after three years if necessary.

All applicants must have passed the CITB Operatives Health, Safety & Environment Test 

     
 CSCS-Red-Experienced-worker-temporary  

Experienced Worker

This card is available to workers with on the job experience (normally at least one year in the last three) and is issued on a temporary basis, while a NVQ or SVQ is being achieved. It is expected to be replaced by a Blue Skilled worker card on achievement of NVQ or SVQ Level 2 or higher. The card is valid for one year and is non-renewable. 

All applicants must have passed the CITB Operatives Health, Safety & Environment Test within the past two years and be registered for the relevant NVQ or SVQ.

     
 CSCS-Red-Experienced-technical-supervisor   Experienced Technical Supervisor

Supervisors and Managers with on the job experience (normally at least one year in the last three) who do not hold an NVQ or SVQ level 3,4 or 5 and are not a member of an approved Professional Body.

The card is valid for three years and is non-renewable.  The card is issued on a temporary basis, while a NVQ or SVQ is being achieved. It is expected to be replaced by a skilled five year card on achievement of NVQ or SVQ Level 3 or higher.

All applicants must be registered for the relevant NVQ or SVQ and have passed the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test within the past two years.
     

 CSCS-Green-Construction-site-operative

  Construction Site Operative

If you are renewing or applying for a new green card up to June 30th 2014 the following applies:

This card is available to workers who carry out basic site skills only e.g. Labourers.

It is available if you have either:

  1. Your employer’s recommendation (industry accreditation).  Your employer must use the industry accreditation competencies, when recommending you or
  2. NVQ or SVQ level 1

This card is valid for five years

All applicants must pass the CITB Operatives Health, Safety & Environment Test.

     
 CSCS-Green-Labourer   Labourer 

You can apply for this card if you have either:

Passed the Level One Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment. Click here  for more details about the Award

or

Hold a valid Site Safety Plus Health and Safety Awareness Course certificate (click here for information on our courses).

All applicants must pass the Operatives CITB Health Safety & Environment test.

This card is valid for five years and can be renewed subject to the above conditions being met

     
CSCS-Black-Site-Manager  

Manager

This card is available for manager occupations subject to:

achievement of NVQ/SVQ levels 4, 5, (or QCF Level 6 or 7) in the relevant occupation

This card is valid for five years

All applicants must pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test.  

     
CSCS-Gold-Superviser-Advanced-craft  

Advanced Craft/ Supervisory

This card is available if you have either

achieved an NVQ or SVQ level 3 or

you have completed an approved indentured apprenticeship (e.g.with NJCBI, BATJIC etc.) or

completed an employer sponsored apprenticeship which included the achievement of a City and Guilds of London Institute Advanced Craft Certificate.

This card is valid for five years.

All applicants must pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test.  For Advanced Craft occupations you should take the Operative or the Specialist test depending what your occupation is.  For Supervisory occupations you should take the Supervisors test.

     
 CSCS-White-professionally-qualified-person  

Professionally Qualified Person

This card is available to competence assessed members of CSCS approved Professional Bodies

This card is valid for five years

All applicants must pass the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety and Environment Test.

When you apply for this card you will need to provide your membership number and level. You will also need to provide the name, membership number and level and contact number of someone of the same level or higher in the same professional body as you who is prepared to recommend you.  If you apply for this card over the phone you can email proof of your membership.  The customer co-ordinator will confirm the email address during the call.

     
 CSCS-white-construction-related-occupation   Construction related Occupation

This card is available to people working in construction related occupations not covered by the other card categories.

This card is valid for five years.

All applicants must pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test

     
 CSCS-white-academically-qualified   Academically Qualified Person

This card is available to people who have completed certain degrees, HND’s, HNC’s, CIOB Certificates and NEBOSH diplomas.  There is a list of the qualifications accepted here

This card is valid for five years.

All applicants must pass the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety and Environment Test
     
 CSCS-Blue-Skilled-worker   Skilled Worker

This card is available if you have either;

  1. Achieved an NVQ or SVQ level 2 or
  2. Completed an employer sponsored apprenticeship which included the achievement of a City and Guilds of London Institute Craft Certificate.

This card is valid for five years.

All applicants must pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test.  

If you do not have these qualifications, but you are experienced in your job you may apply for an Experienced Worker Card

     
 CSCS-Yellow-construction-site-visitor   Construction Site Visitor

This card is available to people who frequently visit a construction site, but have no construction specific skill.

This card is valid for five years.

All applicants must pass the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment Test.

The issue of this card does not relieve the site managers from their legal obligation to ensure the health, safety and welfare of people entering their sites

 Enhanced Learning Credits Administration Services

The MOD's Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme (ELC) is an initiative to promote lifelong learning amongst members of the Armed Forces. The ELC scheme provides financial support in the form of a single up-front payment in each of a maximum of three separate financial years. ELC funding is only available for pursuit of higher level learning i.e. for courses that result in a nationally recognised qualification at Level 3 or above on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (England and Wales), a Level 6 or above on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF).

There are several stages to the ELC process. Full information is set out in Joint Service Publications (JSP) 898 Part 4, Chapter 3.

The Enhanced Learning Credit Scheme:

First you must register to become an ELCAS Member and accrue a sufficient amount of service before you can submit a claim.

Then you must select a relevant course ensuring that it meets the higher level learning criteria (level three or above) and an Approved ELC Provider.

Thirdly, you must complete and submit an ELC claim, approved by an authorised Education Staff if you are in service or your Single Service Representative if you are out of service.

Introduction

Diploma internationalThe NEBOSH National Diploma has been recognised for many years as a leading qualification in the field of health and safety in the UK, providing the specialist knowledge and understanding, combined with the application of the expertise required to undertake a career as a Safety and Health Practitioner. The NEBOSH International Diploma will fulfil the same objectives in other countries around the world.

The qualification meets the academic requirements to apply for Graduate Membership (Grad IOSH) of Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). This is the first step to becoming a Chartered Health and Safety Practitioner as a Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH). It also accepted by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) as meeting the academic requirements for full membership (MIIRSM).

Who Should Attend?

The NEBOSH International Diploma is the qualification for aspiring health and safety professionals, building directly upon the foundation of knowledge provided by the NEBOSH General Certificate. It is designed to provide students with the expertise required to undertake a career as a safety and health practitioner and also provides a sound basis for progression to postgraduate study.

Course Overview
New Course Price 1250 diploma

The qualification is divided into four units, each of which is assessed separately:

Unit IA: Managing health and safety
Unit IB: Hazardous agents in the workplace
Unit IC: Workplace and work equipment safety
Unit ID: Application of health and safety theory and practice

Students may choose to take individual units in any order over a five year period and will be awarded a unit certificate for each unit passed.

There no formal entry requirements for this qualification, however achievement of the General Certificate or direct equivalent prior to undertaking the Diploma course is highly recommended.

Course Materials

Course materials are provided in a format to suit each delegate, either by e-learning (access to internet required) or traditional distance learning.

For the E-learning route, students are provided with access to our interactive e-learning platform which contains all the course notes, coursework and a number of videos. For Distance learning, students are provided with course books and a file of coursework, including a memory stick containing additional useful resources.

Coursework to be submitted can be completed online or submitted by post or email. Both routes contain the following resources to provide students with the best chance of success throughout the course period;

  • Homework Questions for submission and marking 
  • Exercises for submission and marking
  • Sample Exam questions (not for submission)
  • List of Further reading resources (free publications and websites)

Support is available via a variety of media, such as telephone, email and web conferencing software, so that you can be assured someone is there to assist you should the need arise.

Course Duration


The recommended study time for the Course is 468 hours of learning and research, and although we do not stipulate over what period that the delegate studies for the course we recommend that a delegate takes a minimum of 18 months to study and take all 4 Units.

Examinations

Units IA, IB and IC are each assessed by a three-hour written examination. Candidate scripts are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH. Examinations are held in January and July and can be taken at a number of venues throughout the UK and Internationally. Unit ID is a workplace-based assignment requiring application of learning across the syllabus, and is submitted following the examinations.

CITB Construction Skills

For registered employers, CITB Construction Skills collects levy and offers grants for training.  Registered companies with the CITB-Construction Skills which have met the full criteria of the grant are able to claim for an A09 – Technical and Professional Attendance grant for approved off-the-job training courses such as the NEBOSH National General Certificate and NEBOSH Construction Certificate.

National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety
